The Commissioner's approach to independent science reporting
Vision: Independent reporting on Victoria’s natural environment to enable practical action.
Dr Sparkes has developed two frameworks for environmental reporting reform in Victoria. 'Framework' in this context refers to the approach to science reporting for 'state of' reports to be prepared by the Commissioner.
In 2015, the State and Benefit framework was tabled in Parliament for the 2018 State of the Environment reporting cycle. In 2020, the Commissioner built on this work with the new guiding framework titled Science for Sustainable Development as part of the 2023 State of the Environment reporting cycle.
Science for Sustainable Development
Science for Sustainable Development aligns Victoria’s approach to environmental reporting with international frameworks including the United Nation’s System of Environmental Economic Accounts and Sustainable Development Goals.
This approach provides structure to guide all state of environment reports that will be prepared by the Commissioner during the current reporting cycle to 2024 and includes collaborative methods for working with key stakeholders.
The approach continues the Commissioner’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and the critical role of science, data, and community in decision-making for sustainable development.
